One of my friends is a blogger from the Philippines and aid is desperately needed at this point. She said that money that goes through private charities works better than giving it to the government due to some sticky pockets. If you are thinking of making a contribution, be it cash or items here is how to do it:

BALSA will be coordinating efforts to distribute food, medicines, clothing and other basic necessities to help the people through this crisis. Because BALSA is firmly linked with the masses, aid will directly go towards the basic sectors of society – the workers, peasants and the urban poor who make up the majority of the victims (despite media attention that “the poor and rich are equally impacted”).
