House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer said Tuesday that while he supports a public option in a health care overhaul bill, he doesn’t think its omission should scuttle the top domestic policy priority of President Obama and the Democratic Congress.

Even without a public option, emerging health legislation includes much “that is very good, moves us forward, enhances very substantially accessibility, expands greatly the number of people covered by insurance and provides for very, very broadly supported insurance reforms,” he told reporters as the House returned from its long August break.
